A Guide to Death Care in Ontario - Bereavement Authority of Ontario

Cemetery grounds may be uneven and wet and there may be areas of sinking. Our staff regularly restore grave conditions as weather and grounds conditions permit.

To ensure safety, decorations that are ceramic, glass or breakable are not permitted at any time. Please review the Lot Decoration Rules for more information. Thank you for your assistance in helping to protect and preserve the dignity, respect, beauty and safety of Cambridge’s historic cemeteries.

Any lot decorations that do not comply with the cemetery by-laws, that are placed in the scattering gardens, that encroach upon adjacent lots or that are deemed to be unsafe may be removed by the City without notice.

No decorations are permitted to be attached to or wedged in between columbarium niches.  Potted plants, plant material and decorations are not permitted at the base of or around public columbaria.

The cemetery by-laws do not permit stone mulch, raised borders around gardens or breakable items, such as those made from glass or ceramics.  Borders around gardens must be flushed with the ground.

No decorations of any kind may be placed on a memorial bench or on or around a memorial tree. Any decorations may be removed by the City without notice.

The City shall is not responsible for any loss, theft or damage to decorations on a grave except for damage that has been shown to have been caused by the City.

Lot decorations shall not be placed on a lot if payment of any fees relating to the lot is outstanding.

Decorations that do not comply with the cemetery by-laws or are unsafe will be removed by staff.  Please contact the office to arrange to pick up of decorations that have been removed. Decorations that do not comply with the by-laws, that are deemed unsafe or damaged, or plant material that has died or becomes unsightly may be thrown out by cemetery staff.

Lot Decoration Rules May 1 - October 31

Upright Monument Lots:

  • A garden 14-inches from the foundation of an upright monument may be installed for natural plant material, such as annuals, perennials or bulbs.  Gardens cannot exceed the width of the foundation or extend into adjacent lots.  Borders around gardens must be flushed with the ground.  Two potted (shatter-resistant) plants may also be placed in the garden.  Dwarf shrubs are allowed beside monuments centered on double/triple lots only.  Artificial candles and solar lights in plastic containers (no glass or ceramics) must be securely placed and are permitted in gardens on attended upright monument lots only. Lot owners are responsible for trimming shrubs and tending their gardens.

 Flat Marker Lots:

  • Gardens may not be installed in front of flat marker memorials. One potted (shatter-resistant) plant, no more than 10” in height or width, is permitted on top of flat markers.  No permanent plant material or gardens are allowed.  Fresh, dried or silk flower arrangements may be placed in a non-breakable or retractable vase.  One vase is allowed per flat marker.

By November 1st, please remove all lot decorations, specifically those that are valuable, sentimental or breakable (including solar lamps, vases and candles).  This will help us ensure that they are not damaged by our equipment or weather conditions during fall/winter maintenance and that the grounds remain safe for staff and visitors to the cemeteries.

Lot Decoration Rules November 1 - April 30

No lot decorations or other objects may be left on a lot except for the following:

  • Wreaths, provided that:
    • If placed in a flat marker section, the wreath is displayed on a metal stand and is placed directly over the monument,
    • If placed in an upright monument section, the wreath is placed in front of the monument and as close as possible to the monument, and,
    • The wreath does not have a plastic covering; and,
  • Silk flower arrangements, provided that they are placed in a stand or attached to a monument

To allow for seasonal maintenance, please remove all winter wreaths, artificial flowers and decorations by May 1.
