City celebrates accomplishments with 2025 Year in Review
The City of Cambridge is happy to share its 2025 Year in Review, which highlights the City’s achievements over the past year.
“I look back on 2025 with great pride. Our city reached major milestones – from reopening the expanded Preston Memorial Auditorium to making real progress on infrastructure and recreation projects that will serve families for years to come. We hosted our first City‑led Canada Day celebration in collaboration with our volunteers, bringing the community together in a meaningful way, and we supported local businesses through initiatives like the tariff impact survey to better understand the challenges they faced following U.S.-imposed tariffs. A true highlight for me was See Me, Hear Me: The Unheard Voices Summit. Hearing families bravely share their experiences with mental health and addictions was incredibly powerful and reinforced the importance of compassion – and of ensuring people can access the supports they need, including resources for grandparents raising their grandchildren and the needed changes to legislation. I’m also incredibly proud that Cambridge has been meeting every target under the federal Housing Accelerator Fund. This achievement reflects hard work across the city and ensures we receive the funding needed to keep building more homes, faster, for the people who need them most. As we head into 2026, I’m excited to build on this momentum and continue shaping a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive Cambridge for everyone,” said Mayor Jan Liggett.
In 2025 the City continued to work towards our goals of People, Place and Prosperity as part of our three-year Strategic Plan – Cambridge Connected. Some of the key highlights include:
- The City secured $32.4M in external grant funding for key City projects.
- The Preston Memorial Auditorium reopened after extensive renovations and expansion.
- The City engaged with residents to formalize our Multi-Year Accessibility Plan.
- Launched, Under his Eye: the Gilead Experience – a self-guided tour highlighting key filming locations and props from the Handmaid’s Tale.
- Construction began on the new two-lane Black Bridge over the Speed River. This project also includes upgrading the existing heritage bridge and improving safety and travel in the area.
- The Asset Management Plan was approved, providing an overview of the state of infrastructure owned, operated and maintained by the City. This plan will enable enhanced decision-making and future planning.
- The Parks Master Plan was approved, guiding the development of the City’s parks, trails and outdoor spaces for the next 30 years.
- The City added Canada Day celebrations and the Cambridge Santa Claus Parade to its umbrella of events.
- Through the Small Business Centre 98 businesses were created or expanded.
- Cambridge Fire Department held 399 public education events.
- The City is continuing to work on a housing needs assessment to address identified issues, gaps and needs of current and future residents with respect to affordable housing.
“Since joining the City in November, it is clear to see how dedicated and committed our staff are to delivering quality service to residents,” said City Manager, Rob Axiak. “City employees are working hard every day to deliver on our commitments made by council to ensure Cambridge continues to be a vibrant and prosperous community, and I want to applaud their ongoing effort.”
