Ways to manage fall leaves as leaf collection returns November 2
As leaves begin to fall, the Region of Waterloo’s yard waste program offers one way to manage leaves throughout the season, including after the City's leaf collection program ends. Other options include backyard composting and mulching leaves into lawns and garden beds.
The City's Leaf Collection Program begins Monday, November 2 and runs until Friday, November 27. While warmer weather means many trees are holding onto their leaves longer than usual, crews will begin collecting as scheduled to avoid delays and the risk of winter weather. Crews may revisit areas a second time, weather and operational conditions permitting.
Before you grab your rake, remember that timing matters. Rake leaves as close as possible to your scheduled collection date to avoid leaving them on the road where they can create a hazard for motorists, cyclists and children. Raking too early can leave piles wet, compacted or scattered by wind, making collection more challenging.
Keep waste carts, green bins and recycling containers off the roadway throughout the leaf collection and winter season. Clear roads help crews collect leaves efficiently and leave space for snow clearing as winter approaches.
You can help by:
-
Using the Region of Waterloo’s yard waste program throughout the season, especially if leaves fall after your City collection week
-
Composting leaves in your backyard or mulching them into lawns and garden beds
-
Raking your leaves close to your scheduled collection date
-
Moving parked vehicles off the road on your scheduled collection dates wherever possible and keeping leaf piles clear of parked cars
-
Keeping waste carts, green bins and recycling containers off the road
-
Place waste carts, green bins and recycling containers at the end of your driveway, not behind parked vehicles
