Statement from Mayor Jan Liggett: Cambridge Scottish Festival

Please see Mayor Jan Liggett’s statement regarding the cancellation of the Cambridge Scottish Festival below.

"I am disappointed to learn of the organizers' decision to cancel the Cambridge Scottish Festival.
For many years, the Festival has been an important part of Cambridge's cultural landscape, celebrating Scottish heritage, traditions, music, athletics, and community connections. The event has welcomed residents and visitors alike and has become a valued tradition that has contributed to the vibrancy of our community. During my term as Mayor, increasing tourism and events as economic drivers has been a top priority.

The City has proudly supported the Festival over the years through municipal services, operational assistance, and funding, recognizing the important role the event has played in fostering cultural appreciation and community engagement. While the decision to cancel the Festival rests with the organizers, we respect their choice and acknowledge the significant commitment required to stage an event of this scale.

A couple days ago, Councillor Adam Cooper was notified by the organizers of the Scottish Festival that they may have to cancel their event this year. Councillor Cooper began searching for external sources of funding as I took steps to arrange a special council meeting, as additional funding has to be approved by council, and we did not have a council meeting scheduled until July 21st. However, time was not on our side.

The Cambridge Scottish Festival has been a source of community pride for many years, so its cancellation is certainly a loss for the city. The festival is closely connected to Cambridge's history and our strong Scottish roots, which are reflected throughout our community and built heritage. There is nothing more awesome than hearing and seeing hundreds of bagpipers converge in our city in one location – this is a tremendous loss.

Today, our focus is on celebrating the Festival's history and the many volunteers, organizers, participants, sponsors, and community members who have contributed to its success over the years. Their dedication has helped create lasting memories and meaningful experiences for generations of residents and visitors.

We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who has been involved in the Cambridge Scottish Festival throughout its history and recognize the lasting cultural legacy it leaves in our community. I am left feeling optimistic – just because the Festival could not go ahead this year does not mean we cannot continue to support it next year."
