Statement of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest

Design and Physical Value

The subject property of 61 Cambridge Street contains a two-storey brick building built in the Italianate architectural style built in the late 19th century in Galt, circa 1880. The Italianate style, inspired by Tuscan architecture during the Italianate Renaissance, was seen as an alternative to the Classical Revival and Gothic Revival styles according to the Ontario Architectural Style Guide 2009. The style tended to be highly decorative or with controlled ornateness with elements such as overhanging eaves with decorative brackets, verandahs or porches, tall and narrow arched windows, and bay windows.

Representative attributes of the Italianate style by the buff brick exterior, medium-pitch cross-gable roof with overhanging eaves and trim, decorative bargeboard on the front facing gable, decorative brackets on gable ends, one-storey bay windows with decorative brackets and trim, narrow arched window openings, brick voussoirs, sills, entrance with transom and sidelight, brick chimney, covered front one-storey verandah along the front façade, and stone foundation.

The subject property displays a high degree of craftsmanship through the decorative bargeboard on the front facing gable.

Contextual Value

The subject property at 61 Cambridge Street maintains and supports the late 19th century residential-commercial character of Cambridge Street from the south of the intersection of Park Hill Road East onwards, as well as the overall historic character of the Town of Galt, through its Italianate architectural style, construction materials, form, and setback which helps to give a visual setting and character.

The subject property is visually linked to 65 Cambridge Street and 67 Cambridge Street as the subject property’s architectural style, construction materials, orientation and form, used to build all three houses are incredibly similar, aside from modern additions and the removal of the verandah from 67 Cambridge Street.
