PUBLIC NOTICE: 2026 Municipal Election - Third Party Advertiser Registration
MUNICIPAL ELECTION ACT, 1996 s.88.29
The Municipal Elections Act provides that individuals, corporations or trade unions are eligible to register as a third-party advertiser for the 2026 Municipal Election to be held on Monday, October 26, 2026, provided that they have formally registered with the local Clerk.
Registration allows a third-party advertiser to promote or oppose any candidate that the electors in the municipality can vote for.
Registration Procedure:
- Third party advertisers must complete and file a registration form between May 1 to October 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Forms can be picked up at City Hall – 1st Floor, 50 Dickson Street, Cambridge, Ontario, during regular working hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
- To complete a registration with the City of Cambridge, a one-hour in-person appointment must be booked with the City Clerk by telephone: 519-513-6415 OR email: election@cambridge.ca. Third party advertisers are not considered registered until a meeting has occurred with the Clerk, and the Clerk has signed the registration form.
- There is no registration fee for third party advertising, but the Clerk must examine the registration and then certify the notice of registration if deemed compliant.
-No individual, corporation or trade union shall incur expenses for a third-party advertisement unless the individual, corporation or trade union is registered with the municipality when the expenses are incurred and the advertisement appears. If third party advertisers want to advertise in more than one municipality, they will have to register in each municipality. This means that each registration is a separate campaign with its own spending limits. The onus is on the third party to ensure proper registration and compliance with campaign spending requirements. - Those third parties who register with the Clerk’s office must adhere to sections 88.27(1) and 92(4) of the Municipal Election Act. The Clerk shall give notice of all of the filing requirements and penalties to every third party at least 30 days before the filing date.
