New partnership makes library access easier for isolated residents

Last week, Friendly Visiting volunteers gathered at the Cambridge Public Library to learn about a new initiative that will help bring library resources directly into the homes of isolated seniors. 

The Friendly Visiting program matches a volunteer with an adult experiencing social isolation, or with a physical disability. In this partnership with the library, Friendly Visiting volunteers can borrow materials on behalf of their matches and enjoy them together during visits.  

Clients can access not just books, but magazines, board games, activity kits, puzzles, movies, and digital resources, including newspapers and publications from around the world. These materials can encourage learning, help spark conversations, and create fun, shared experiences between the volunteers and their clients.  

The Cambridge Public Library has also extended the lending period to nine weeks, giving more flexibility for volunteers and clients to enjoy their borrowed materials together.  

This partnership creates access for people who may otherwise face barriers in accessing the library.
