Mandatory bag checks at Council meetings to begin Sept. 23
Beginning on Tuesday, September 23, all visitors attending City of Cambridge Council meetings will be required to undergo bag checks at City Hall.
The new security measure, in line with practices in other Canadian municipalities, is intended to enhance safety for Council members, City staff and the public.
“This measure is about ensuring Council meetings remain both safe and welcoming for everyone,” said Jennifer Shaw, Acting Director of the City Clerk’s Office. “Public participation is vital to local government. This approach enhances security while keeping meetings open and accessible. Clear signage and notices will guide attendees through the new process.”
Bag checks will be conducted by the City’s security team at the City Hall entrance. Security personnel will visually inspect purses, backpacks, briefcases and other bags before entry to Council Chambers.
The City’s security team will continue to review security practices, with further updates possible in the future.
Those who do not wish to participate in the bag check can watch meetings live on the City’s YouTube channel.
