Draining pools and hot tubs responsibly this season
As we head into the cooler season, a reminder to please drain your pools and hot tubs responsibly by not dumping chlorinated water into storm sewers, parks, neighbouring properties, or other natural areas in the city.
Unlike household drains, storm sewers flow straight into local rivers carrying chemicals that harm fish, wildlife, and the environment.
What to do instead:
• Dechlorinate first – let water sit 1–2 weeks without chemicals, or use dechlorination tablets
• Test before draining – chlorine/bromine must be 0.1 mg/L or lower
• Avoid storm sewers, parks and natural areas – never drain water directly into them
• Drain slowly on your property – use a small hose over several days to prevent flooding
• Saltwater pools – arrange disposal through a licensed hauler or drain into your home’s sanitary sewer (e.g., laundry sink). Salt does not break down naturally and can damage waterways.
By following these steps, you’ll help keep our rivers and community healthy, clean, and safe.
