City of Cambridge suspends open-air burning permits due to current conditions
Cambridge Fire Department is advising residents effective immediately, all open-air burning permits within the city of Cambridge are suspended until further notice due to current weather conditions and elevated fire risk. No new permits will be issued during the suspension. This decision has been made in the interest of public safety and the protection of property, infrastructure, and natural areas. Current environmental conditions increase the potential for fires to spread rapidly and create hazards for residents, firefighters, and the community.
The suspension applies to all open-air burning permits issued by the Cambridge Fire Department. Residents are asked not to burn brush, yard waste, or other materials during the suspension period. While the by-law exemption for small, supervised cooking fires used on barbecues or grills remains in effect, the Cambridge Fire Department strongly encourages residents to avoid all non-essential outdoor cooking activities during this period of elevated fire risk. Residents choosing to use barbecues or cooking appliances outdoors are urged to exercise extreme caution, keep ignition sources well away from combustible materials, and ensure equipment is constantly supervised.
Under City of Cambridge By-law 313-86, all open-air fires require approval from the Fire Chief or designate, and any open-air burning permit may be cancelled by the Fire Chief or designate. Residents are reminded that no person may continue to burn after a permit has been cancelled.
The Fire Department will continue to monitor weather conditions and fire risk levels. The suspension will remain in place until conditions improve and it is safe to resume open air burning activities.
Residents seeking updates on the status of the suspension are encouraged to visit the City of Cambridge website or follow official City communication channels.
