City of Cambridge identifies off-schedule third-party livestreaming at arenas
This morning, City of Cambridge staff were able to confirm that cameras intended for the streaming of live sporting events and recreational activities in city arenas have remained operational and inadvertently streamed participants in youth camps. The cameras are to be activated when organized sport (practices or games) were scheduled. The cameras are owned, installed and operated by LiveBarn Inc (LiveBarn) as part of their subscription based streaming service intended to broadcast minor sports games across Ontario.
The locations with summer camps and LiveBarn cameras are Hespeler Arena, Dickson Arena, and Cambridge Sports Park and were recently active and streaming on the facility ice pads. Once the cameras were determined to be operational, streaming service was immediately discontinued and notice is being provided to parents of children enrolled in summer camp and anyone who may have been captured on the livestream. All LiveBarn cameras have now been turned off in city owned facilities.
Staff will be working with LiveBarn to determine the duration of the streaming and how to prevent this from occurring in the future and have paused service at this time. The City of Cambridge has numerous procedures in place to protect the safety and privacy of our program participants and visitors to our facilities. We sincerely apologize for the oversight, regret that this issue has caused concern or confusion by those impacted and are committed to correcting the issue.
City of Cambridge staff have reported this incident to the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (the “IPC”) and will work with recommendations that are provided. Anyone in Ontario who believes their privacy has been breached may make a report to the IPC. Further details will be provided to those impacted as it becomes available and we remain committed to maintaining trust and protecting the privacy of our community members.
