City of Cambridge enhancing accessible voting options for the 2026 Municipal Election
The City of Cambridge is committed to making voting accessible, inclusive and welcoming for all eligible voters in the 2026 Municipal Election.
As part of this commitment, accessibility has been a key consideration in the selection and preparation of voting locations across the city. The goal is to ensure that every voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot independently with confidence. A voting location in each ward will be equipped with an Accessible Ballot Marking Device (ABMD). This technology will provide voters with enhanced options for independently marking their ballot. The enhanced options include:
- Touchscreen controls
- Handheld touchpad navigation
- Paddle switches
- Sip-and-puff technology
- Audio ballot support
- Other assistive features that promote independent voting
Accessibility extends beyond the voting process itself. The City is offering an at-home voting program for individuals unable to leave their homes due to illness or extenuating circumstances. Additionally, the City is working to ensure voting locations are accessible and accommodate a wide range of needs wherever possible. All voting locations will include:
- Barrier-free entrances and pathways
- Accessible parking spaces
- Wheelchair-accessible voting areas
- Seating for voters who may require rest while waiting
- Election staff available to provide assistance when requested
