City of Cambridge announces new City Manager
After an extensive search for an inspiring and exemplary leader, the City of Cambridge is pleased to announce Rob Axiak will become the new City Manager, effective Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
Mr. Axiak joins the City of Cambridge from his role as Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Welland in Niagara Region and brings more than 30 years of experience in municipal government to the City. Throughout his career, Mr. Axiak has held many leadership roles in several Ontario municipalities, including Mississauga and Burlington. Born and raised in nearby Hamilton, he has a professional and personal foundation in Community Services and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Western University.
“On behalf of Council, I am pleased to welcome Rob to the role of City Manager. He brings exceptional leadership in strategic and operational planning and has extensive experience working with communities on innovative projects that enhance engagement and build a strong sense of community pride,” said Mayor Jan Liggett. “I am confident that Rob is the right fit for Cambridge, and I know he will work well with Council, staff and the community. We’re in good hands to ensure that Cambridge continues to thrive as a community in Waterloo Region and beyond.”
Mr. Axiak is looking forward to working with staff, Council and the community to lead the City's administration and work closely with Council to advance the City's priorities and serve the residents of Cambridge with dedication, openness and vision.
"Cambridge is a city with incredible momentum and a place with endless opportunity,” said Mr. Axiak. “I am honoured to accept the City Manager role and I am excited to join the talented team and work alongside Mayor Liggett, Council, and City leadership to ensure Cambridge continues to thrive as a vibrant, desirable, and forward-thinking city."
Mr. Axiak has been selected for this role as part of the provincial Strong Mayor legislation and this announcement follows an extensive candidate search and rigorous interview process coordinated by an external recruitment specialist and with participation from the Interim City Manager and an additional member of Council. He will replace former City Manager David Calder, who retired at the end of August, and Interim City Manager Yogesh Shah, who has been acting in the role since September.
“I would like to thank Mr. Shah for stepping in as Interim City Manager during this transition period and providing leadership that allowed for stability while the recruitment process for this role was underway.” said Mayor Liggett.
