City makes water safety a priority this summer
The City of Cambridge is helping residents stay safe as they enjoy water activities this summer through safety education during National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW), July 19 to 25. Led by the Lifesaving Society, in partnership with the City, the annual campaign raises awareness about water safety and aims to empower everyone of all ages with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent drowning.
As part of our commitment to community safety and healthy recreation, the City will host a series of activities and educational programs, along with family friendly events designated to make learning about water safety engaging and accessible.
Drowning can occur quickly — often in less than 30 seconds. Children under the age of 12, boaters, young men and adults aged 65 and older are among the groups at greatest risk of drowning. The NDPW campaign emphasizes key safety practices, including learning basic swimming and water safety skills, wearing a life jacket when boating, actively supervising children near water and never swimming alone.
The City encourages everyone to take part in NDPW and make water safety part of every summer outing by staying alert around water, understanding potential risks and looking out for one another.
