Community Flag Raisings

The flags of Canada, the Province of Ontario, and the City of Cambridge regularly fly on the three flagpoles at City Hall. Non-profit or charitable organizations located in Cambridge or the Waterloo Region wishing to raise their flag to mark an event may submit a request online.

Requirements & Eligibility
The request must include the following information:
  • Name of the requesting organization
  • Contact information
  • Requested event or occasion
  • Date or time period of event or occasion
  • Explanation or purpose of the event or occasion
  • Description of the applicant organization including any local, national or international affiliation, brief history, and any other relevant information.

Requests will be considered on a first come first served basis. 

Requirements and Criteria: 

  • Must not include messages or be from organizations or groups that espouse hatred, discrimination, violence, intolerance or racism
  • Must be non-political 
  • Must be non-denominational
  • Must be non-commercial
  • Must not be contrary to City policies or bylaws
  • Other than where specifically outlined in this criteria, the Sign will not be lit for individual personal occasions (e.g. birthdays, anniversaries)
  • Other than where specifically outlines in this criteria, lighting for any specific organization, cause, event or commemoration will only take place ONCE per calendar year

Flags at Half-Mast

The City of Cambridge lowers flags to half-mast as a symbol of mourning or commemoration.

The City flies the flag at half-mast for the following occasions:

  • On the death of Her Majesty the Queen or members of the Royal Family
  • On the death of a past or present Canadian Prime Minister
  • On the death of past or present Federal, Provincial or Municipal elected officials
  • On the death of past or present Mayors or Members of City Council
  • On the death of current City employees
  • As directed by the Governor General of Canada or Lieutenant Governor of Ontario
  • Under specific circumstances as determined by the Mayor and City Council or City Manager
  • International Holocaust Day
  • Remembrance Day

  • Description of the applicant organization including any local, national or international affiliation, brief history, and any other relevant information.

Requests will be considered on a first come first served basis. Should the Cambridge sign and/or pedestrian bridge not be available on your chosen date you may be given the option of an alternate date.
