Meet Maureen, longtime wedding officiant at the City of Cambridge

For more than 20 years, Maureen has served the City of Cambridge in a variety of roles, but beyond her day-to-day work as a City employee, many residents know her as the City’s official wedding officiant. With her kind and calming presence, she’s helped countless couples begin their married lives together - one “I do” at a time.
Years ago, City Hall weddings were performed by a contracted minister. When the City decided to train staff and bring the service in-house, Maureen saw a new opportunity, “I was the first person to put up my hand,” she recalls. What began as a new responsibility quickly became a rewarding part of her career.
Over the years, Maureen has officiated more than 1,000 weddings, helping couples celebrate one of the most meaningful days of their lives.
“Every wedding feels different, even when the ceremony is similar,” says Maureen. “Each couple brings their own story, personalities, traditions and emotions.” Some ceremonies are filled with laughter and inside jokes. Others are deeply emotional for couples, their families and even for Maureen, “Parents, grandparents, stepparents and siblings often bring a tear to my eye,” she says. “You can see how much love and pride they have in that moment.”
After officiating so many weddings, Maureen has seen it all. One of her favourite moments is watching nervous grooms before the ceremony begins, “Then he sees his beautiful bride walking in and all the nerves melt away.” She’s also watched as flower girls and ring bearers abandon their duties mid-ceremony, and countless family members moved to tears. Some of the most memorable moments come during the vows. While many couples write heartfelt messages to one another, Maureen says the shortest vows are often the most powerful.
Many people may picture City Hall weddings as simple, quick ceremonies, but Maureen says the reason couples choose the location vary widely. Some couples are planning destination weddings and want to complete the legal ceremony before travelling. Others prefer a smaller celebration or are having a friend or family member perform a symbolic ceremony later.
As wedding trends continue to change, Maureen hopes more couples consider City Hall, “Cambridge is one of the most beautiful locations for photos and scenery,” she says. “I love seeing people choose this historic location and having the honour of being part of their special day.”
