Growing smarter: Creating more housing opportunities in Cambridge

As Cambridge grows, so does the need for more homes to meet the needs of a growing and changing population.

The City is working to make it easier for developers to build a range of housing types, including apartment, townhomes, and additional residential units, like basement apartments or in accessory buildings located on the same lot.

These housing options can help meet the needs of both current and future residents from first time homebuyers and growing families to senior and residents looking to downsize but stay in Cambridge.

With support from the federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund, the City is improving tools, streamlining processes, and exploring new ways to plan for growth. Many of the changes supported through the fund are already underway, from making approvals more efficient to helping homeowners create additional residential units.

The City also introduced the Digital Twin, an interactive 3D model that helps anyone visualize future development plans in the city and better understand how projects fit within the broader community.

Together, these efforts are helping create more homes, support a wider range of housing choices and build a stronger, more connected Cambridge for the future.
