Council approves long term vision for major city corridor

Cambridge City Council has approved the Hespeler Road Corridor Secondary Plan, providing a long-term vision to guide the growth and redevelopment of one of the city’s most important corridors over the next 25 years.

Developed through extensive planning and community engagement, the plan establishes a framework for future growth along Hespeler Road. It identifies opportunities for redevelopment, supports transit-oriented growth, including the future ION Light Rail Transit (LRT), and provides direction on land use, transportation planning, and access to new and enhanced parks and open spaces.

By guiding growth in a coordinated way, the plan will help create complete, connected communities that offer residents, businesses, and visitors more options to move throughout the city and connect with neighbouring communities.

Approval of the plan at the August 25, 2026 Council meeting marks a significant milestone for the city and provides clarity for residents, businesses, investors, and developers on the future of Hespeler Road. As Cambridge continues to grow, the corridor is expected to play a critical role in accommodating new residents and jobs, supporting the future of this critical transit corridor, attracting investment, and creating a vibrant, accessible gateway that reflects the city's long-term vision for sustainable growth.
