City of Cambridge partners with Moon Time Connections for successful wildfire relief drive

The Cambridge community came together in a remarkable show of generosity last week, donating essential supplies for individuals and families displaced by ongoing wildfires in northern Ontario.

In partnership with Moon Time Connections (MTC), the City of Cambridge hosted a pop-up donation drive at City Hall, the John Dolson Centre and the W.G. Johnson Centre. Residents were quick to help, donating so many items the drive reached its goal in just two days! While the drive is no longer accepting physical donations, monetary donations are still being accepted, to aid in shipping the donations and supporting affected families.

“It was amazing to see our community come together and support families facing an incredibly challenging situation,” said Hailey Cole, MTC volunteer and Communications Associate for the City of Cambridge. “The response was overwhelming. We saw people donate everyday essentials, helping evacuees meet their immediate needs and demonstrating the compassion Cambridge has.”

The initiative was organized in response to requests for essential supplies from northern Indigenous communities affected by wildfire-related evacuations.

“The generosity shown through this donation drive will help displaced Northern Kin feel safer, welcomed and supported while navigating an unimaginably difficult time,” said Veronica Brown, Ontario Chapter Lead for Moon Time Connections. Brown also shared her deep appreciation for everyone who supported this initiative.

Collected items included unopened diapers, baby supplies, gift cards, pet supplies, mobility aids and personal care products such as soap, shampoo and deodorant. These donations are now being distributed to evacuees through MTC's network of volunteers and frontline organizations supporting communities affected by the fires.

Moon Time Connections, an Indigenous-led and Indigenous-focused menstrual equity organization, works year-round to improve access to menstrual products and education in northern Indigenous communities across Canada. During the wildfire emergency, the organization expanded its efforts to support broader relief and recovery initiatives.
