City launches candidate registration for 2026 Municipal Election
Cambridge, Ontario. (April 20, 2026) The City of Cambridge is preparing for the 2026 Municipal Election scheduled for October 26, 2026. As part of the election process, candidates who are interested in running for an elected municipal role will be able to file as a candidate beginning Friday, May 1. An appointment to file as a candidate is required and online scheduling will be available on the City’s website on Monday, April 27.
Candidate nomination packages can be picked up in person at City Hall starting on Thursday, April 23 during business hours. Candidates must meet eligibility requirements set out in provincial legislation and submit all required documentation by Nomination Day on Friday, August 21, 2026, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at City Hall, 50 Dickson Street.
“Cambridge is a city built on strong neighbourhoods and engaged residents,” said Jennifer Shaw, City Clerk. “The nomination period marks the official kick-off to the municipal election process and provides an opportunity for all residents to learn more about the roles and responsibilities of municipal government.”
The municipal election is administered by the City Clerk under provincial legislation to ensure a fair, open, and transparent process for voters, candidates, and participants. Registration will also become available on May 1 for individuals or organizations intending to participate as third party advertisers.
“Our team is here to help candidates navigate the requirements and key dates every step of the way,” said Shaw. “We want to provide participants with the information and clarity needed to take part confidently.”
Aspiring municipal election candidates are invited to attend the Region of Waterloo Lead Local: Municipal Election Candidate Information Night, taking place on April 23 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will feature presentations from municipal experts, panel discussions with former elected officials, and opportunities to connect with municipal returning officers. City of Cambridge candidate packages will be available for pickup at this event.
