Cambridge Fire lifts suspension on open-air burn permits

The Cambridge Fire Department is lifting the temporary suspension of open-air burn permits, effective immediately.

Improved weather conditions have reduced the fire risk that led to the precautionary suspension. As a result, residents may once again apply for and utilize Open Air Burn Permits in accordance with City of Cambridge By-law 313-86 and all permit conditions.

While open air burning is permitted, the Cambridge Fire Department reminds residents that outdoor burning carries inherent risks and must be conducted safely and responsibly.

Under the City's Open Air Burning By-law:

• Residents must obtain a valid Open Air Burn Permit before conducting any permitted burning activity.
• Fires must be attended at all times by a responsible adult.
• Burning is prohibited when weather conditions prevent the safe dispersal of smoke.
• Burning must not create a nuisance for neighbouring properties or a hazard for motorists.
• Permit holders must comply with all permit conditions and directions provided by the Cambridge Fire Department.

Residents are encouraged to consider current weather conditions, including wind speed and direction, before lighting any fires. Fires should be extinguished immediately if conditions become unsafe or if smoke adversely affects neighbouring properties, roadways, or public spaces.

The Cambridge Fire Department also reminds residents that only approved materials may be burned. Burning plastics, rubber, petroleum products, and other materials that produce excessive smoke is not permitted.

Anyone planning an open-air burn must obtain the required permit before burning. Information regarding permit requirements and the application process is available through the Cambridge Fire Department.

Stay Fire Safe

Before conducting any open-air burning activity:

• Keep a water source or extinguishing equipment readily available.
• Ensure the burn area is clear of combustible materials.
• Continuously monitor weather conditions.
• Never leave a fire unattended.
• Fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area.
