Cambridge celebrates Galt Football Club’s local history

Cambridge celebrated a special piece of local sporting history this week with the unveiling of a provincial commemorative plaque honouring the Galt Football Club.

Presented by the Ontario Heritage Trust, the plaque recognizes the early Canadian soccer team’s remarkable achievements, including becoming the first Ontario Cup champions and winning gold at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis.

Community, heritage and soccer representatives gathered at City Hall to reflect on the team’s legacy before the plaque was installed in Dickson Park, where residents and visitors can learn more about this proud chapter in Cambridge’s history.

The celebration also marked the Cambridge debut of the Ontario Soccer Hall of Fame’s travelling Soccer Time Capsule, which will collect soccer stories and memorabilia from communities across Ontario.

Residents are encouraged to contribute photographs, memorabilia, stories or other soccer-related items while the capsule is on display at Cambridge City Hall until July 24.

Items can be dropped off at Cambridge City Hall, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., until July 24.
