Busy sidewalks expected as kids head back to school
As students head back to classrooms next week, our roads and sidewalks will be busier with children walking, biking or cycling to school. The City would like to remind drivers to do their part to keep our school communities safe.
When driving near schools or playgrounds please remember the following:
- Slow down and obey posted speed limits in school zones
- Watch for Crossing Guards and pedestrians at school crossings
- Yield to pedestrians at intersections
- Follow all traffic signs and signals
- Be patient and alert during busy drop-off and pick-up times
- E-scooters are not allowed on sidewalks, and you must be at least 16 years old to legally ride an e-scooter
- Do not stop, stand, or park in designated No Parking or No Stopping zones around schools
City by-law officers will be visiting school zones, and issuing tickets to vehicles illegally parked where No Parking, No Stopping or Fire Route signage is posted, as those pose a safety concern to pedestrians, especially children, heading to and from school. The tickets can be issued at the time of the infraction or could be mailed to the registered vehicle owner.
For parents, this is a great opportunity to remind children of the rules of the road, to follow instructions from crossing guards, and stay safe while heading to school.
