Friendly Visiting Programs
We are currently recruiting for Volunteers for our programs!
Overtime, individuals and/or their caregivers may begin to isolate themselves and become socially withdrawn as they find it more and more difficult to stay connected to friends, the community or to leave the safety and comfort of their homes.
The Friendly Visiting Program of Cambridge is a free Community Support Service. The program matches a volunteer with a socially isolated older adult, or an adult with a physical disability for regularly scheduled social and recreational visits. Activities may include: conversation, playing card and games, sharing a book, taking a walk, sitting outside, or enjoying an outing to the coffee shop or mall.
To be eligible, clients must:
- Live alone in the community or with family members
- Live in the Cambridge/North Dumfries area
- Have limited social contacts outside of the home
- Will not require personal care during the visit
- May have a disability or experience memory loss
Volunteers are:
- 18 years of age and older
- Able to visit daytime, evenings, or weekends at a mutually convenient time
- Screened with a Police Records check, interview and reference check
Volunteers do not provide:
- Personal care
- Housekeeping
- Meal preparation
- Grocery shopping
- Medical care
Without Walls (WOW) telephone program may be offered for those waiting to be matched to a volunteer. This program offers groups of 5 to 10 people the opportunity to get together over the phone for conversation, trivia games, bingo, and even musical sessions.
If you would like more information about the Friendly Visiting Program, or apply to be a volunteer, please call 519-623-1340, ext. 4820 or email friendlyvisiting@cambridge.ca
Cambridge Council on Aging
The Cambridge Council on Aging is a forum for seniors and community members to mobilize and work together to make Cambridge an age friendly community.
