Exciting momentum
Pickleball has steadily gained popularity over recent years, to the point that our facilities are stretched to support.
We greatly appreciate your patience as we adjust to better meet the demand and aim to offer a level of play to keep everyone engaged and excited. We will continue to add programs and staff resources where possible, alongside the adjustments to how we facilitate drop-in programs.
Please extend your fair and respectful approach off the courts to our staff and others with the same passion to play.
Drop-in program updates
Starting January 2024, John Dolson and W.G. Johnson/Ted Wake Centres will move our original 3 hour time slots into 2 x 90 minute time slots.
In addition, William E. Pautler 50+ Centre will trial the following structure:
- Two programs will run for 90 minutes each, from 9-10:30 a.m. & 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday (9 a.m. remains ‘Easy Pace Play’), Wednesday and Friday.
- 30 minutes before the start of the two programs each day, a sign-in board will offer space for 24 players.
- To be fair to all pickleball players, if you have played in the first session we ask you wait until your play has finished at 10:30 before registering for a second session.
- Three games will play at one time. Waiting teams will rotate in at the end of each game for the 90-minute program.
- Each player must sign in. You will not be able to sign in other players.
- Further changes are being assessed, including advanced registration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why have I seen people under 50 years old participating in 50+ programs? |
Non 50 + members or those 18+ are always welcome but will be required to pay the 50+ non-member drop-in fee. This applies to all 50+ drop-in programs and registered activities. |
As a 50+ member, why do I need to pay at some time slots and not at others? |
Your 50+ membership applies to the 50+ drop-in time slots. The other time slots are subject to our recreation rates that also apply to basketball, drop-in fitness or swims etc. |
If I want to play competitively what are my options? |
We offer non-competitive social, recreational pickleball play. Other local organizations that offer pickleball or competitive play:
Please note, the City of Cambridge does not endorse or have direct affiliation with these programs. |
Can I be a pickleball instructor or teach beginners that come to play? |
We encourage you to offer guidance to your fellow players, however the drop-in time slots are for recreational play, without a staff instructor or convener. We offer learn to play and intermediate clinics by hired instructors. If interested in teaching, please view current career opportunities page |
Do you have opportunities to improve my skills? |
The City of Cambridge does offer instructional pickleball programs. Though extremely popular, to check availability and register for open courses please visit our online CORAL site. |
Other cities offer programs based on skill level, why does Cambridge not? |
We are hoping that self-selecting those you are playing with will provide the desired level of play. William E. Pautler Centre will pilot changes in January 2024 to help individuals self-select their desired level of play and/or opponents. See further details on the pilot above. |
Can you offer more time slots for pickleball? |
We are actively adding time slots to increase programming where possible. |
