Important Notice:  COVID-19 Update for Cambridge Cemeteries

The City of Cambridge continues to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak and its variants in collaboration with Waterloo Region Public Health, our municipal partners, the Government of Ontario and our Pandemic Response Team.

The Province announced its Roadmap to Reopen, with the intention of phasing in increases in attendance limits for funeral services during a 3-step plan.  Effective June 11, 2021, Ontario will enter Step 1 of this plan for the next 21 days.

Effective June 11, 2021, to ensure the safety of staff and respect all visitors to the cemetery, the City of Cambridge will be increasing funeral attendance limits to a maximum of 25 persons (up from 10). The maximum of 25 persons includes clergy, but does not include cemetery or funeral staff.

The following conditions are in place with regard to funeral services held in Cambridge cemeteries and are the responsibility of the funeral director or authorized person handling the funeral service:

  • A funeral director/authorized staff person must be present during the entire service
  • One funeral staff person is required for every 10 attendees
  • All attendees must wear a mask or face covering at all times
  • All attendees, except members of the same household, must remain a safe distance of at least 2 metres (6 feet) from others at all times
  • The funeral director/authorized staff person is required to keep a record of all attendees for contact tracing

To limit extended physical contact and gatherings, respect all visitors to the cemeteries and permit cemetery staff to complete the interment, funeral services are limited to a maximum duration of one hour.

The Cemeteries Administration Office is open by appointment only so that families may make burial arrangements in person, pick out interment rights when needed and also pre-plan for future burial needs.  Please be advised that there are strict COVID-19 safety precautions in place for any person attending the office.  A maximum of 2 persons at any one time will be permitted entry to the reception area of the office at their scheduled appointment time. The office will remain closed at all other times.

To ensure safety, any persons attending the office for an appointment will be required to:

1.     Answer COVID-19 screening questions

2.     Wear a mask or face covering

3.     Remain a safe distance of 2 metres (6 feet) from staff

4.    Wash or sanitize hands upon entry to the office

To make an appointment, customers may contact our office directly at 519-740-4681 Ext. 4299 or cemeteries@cambridge.ca. Our staff are responding to all telephone calls and e-mails daily and will still continue to attempt to assist you and the families we serve without direct physical contact, if possible.  Please let us know how we can help.

If you are planning on visiting a cemetery, please note that non-funeral gatherings in cemeteries are limited to a maximum of 10 persons.

Please keep your safety and the safety of others in mind and continue to follow the following COVID-19 safety precautions:

  • Wear a mask or face covering at all times
  • Keep a safe distance of 2 metres (6 feet) from others
  • Wash and sanitize your hands frequently
  • Do not attend the cemetery if you are sick, have been in contact with someone that is sick,      have travelled recently or have been in contact with someone that has travelled recently

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support and please stay safe!

Exciting News!

The Chapel was built in 1928 to honour the late James Young (1835 to 1913).  Mr. Young was a well-known journalist, politician and businessman in Galt and also served on Canada’s first parliament in 1867.  He and his family are interred in the marble vault in the basement of the chapel.

We are happy to share with you that the restoration work to the stained-glass windows and the front wooden doors on the historical and beloved Young Chapel at Mount View Cemetery is complete.  The Young Chapel and the Cambridge Mausoleum were featured in this year’s Doors Open event on Saturday, September 21st.  An overwhelming 413 visitors joined our cemetery staff that day for an opportunity to see this historic gem!

This charming chapel is available for rent at affordable rates for services, weddings and gatherings!  To inquire, contact the Cemeteries Administration Office directly at 519-623-1340 Ext. 4299 or e-mail us at cemeteries@cambridge.ca
