There are about 16 subwatersheds (either entirely or partially) within the city of Cambridge. A subwatershed is the area of land that water flows over or through to drain into a larger body of water. Subwatersheds in the city of Cambridge are part of the larger Grand River watershed.

A subwatershed study:

  • Identifies streams, wetlands, forests, groundwater recharge areas and other natural areas part of the subwatershed areas, including an inventory of plants, animals, birds, and other species
  • Includes information on stream flows, water quality, groundwater movement and other natural features
  • Protects, maintains and enhances ecological processes and functions and significant natural features of the subwatershed using sustainable methods
  • Promotes an ecosystem approach to environmental planning in the watershed
  • Encourages early integration of environmental and ecosystem considerations in the preparation of land use plans
  • Helps government agencies, consultants and the development industry understand the needs of the watershed
  • Enhances efficiency and effectiveness of land use plan preparation and the review process
