The partnering communities of Cambridge, the Region of Waterloo, Halton Region and the Town of Milton have come together in a request for increased GO Rail service. This includes two-way, all-day GO Rail service to Milton and, as a concurrent and complementary phase, the extension of GO Rail services further west to Cambridge.

The extension to Cambridge represents an innovative opportunity to pilot new technologies that could have benefits for the entire commuter rail network in southern Ontario.

GO Bus - Cambridge Service (Route 24)

Did you know - you can now ride GO Bus to connect with GO Rail service in Milton?

Recognizing the need for better service to Cambridge, Metrolinx introduced the new Route 24 (Cambridge- Milton) service in 2016.  Visit the GO Transit website for more details.

Metrolinx has recently announced it will be adjusting service on some GO bus routes to ensure resources are being used when and where they are needed most. With this announcement, the City has been notified that effective June 29th, Route 24 in Cambridge will be discontinued due to low demand.

For travel from Cambridge to Milton GO users can take GO Route 25 from Cambridge SmartCentre (Hespeler Rd. @ Pinebush Rd.) to the Regional Rd. 25 @ Hwy. 401 Park & Ride and transfer to Milton Transit to Milton GO.

 2018 Feasibility Study (Cambridge-Guelph)

The Region of Waterloo together with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), and in partnership with the City of Cambridge, have commissioned a study to examine the feasibility of GO rail service to Cambridge using CN tracks along the Fergus subdivision.

The trains would run from Cambridge to Guelph, where they would connect to the existing GO line to Toronto, as well as the future High Speed Rail service.

The Region and MTO will split the funding cost of a feasibility study which is estimated to be approximately $200,000 in total. The Region’s funding comes from the Region’s Transit Supportive Strategy Implementation Plan which seeks to improve transit ridership and encourage transit supportive development within the Central Transit Corridor in Cambridge.

 2015 Cambridge on the Go Business Case (Cambridge-Milton)
In 2015, the City completed "Cambridge on the GO: A Business Case for the Extension of GO Train from Cambridge to Milton." This work incorporates the technical analysis completed as part of the Cambridge to Milton Passenger Rail Business Case and Implementation Strategy (October 2014) and further outlines the benefits that this initiative would provide more broadly.
 What is Cambridge on the GO?

Cambridge on the GO includes an innovative and cost-effective approach to expand and test the market for expanded GO Rail service connecting smaller regional centres.  In the 2014 Business Case, a "pilot approach" recommending the use of Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) from Cambridge to Milton was outlined. This option offered a number of potential advantages over the conventional 12-car GO trains including:

  • Lower operation costs (reduced energy consumption and onboard staff);
  • Faster trip times (improved acceleration/deceleration performance);
  • Lower infrastructure costs (shorter platform requirements);
  • Reduced impacts in an urban environment (shorter delays at level crossings);
  • Greater ability to be integrated with local transit busses in multimodal stations; and
  • Greater reliability in the Cambridge-Milton-Union corridor.
 Key benefits of GO Rail expansion to Cambridge
The City of Cambridge is a significant contributor to the provincial and national economy - both as a unique and vibrant community in its own right, as well as being part of the broader Waterloo Region economic engine. A high quality transportation network is essential to provide access to a wider regional labour force and continue this community's economic contribution. GO Rail expansion to Cambridge will:
  • Connect two of the fastest growing communities in Ontario (Milton and Cambridge) with a lower cost and more flexible rail transit option and provide the infrastructure necessary to foster redevelopment and intensification opportunities for existing and planned mobility hubs in these communities;
  • Create more high paying jobs across all sectors including advanced manufacturing and high tech.  This includes support for the creation of approximately 7,300 new jobs within walking distance of the proposed Cambridge and Milton GO Rail stations creating integrated mobility hubs;
  • Provide support for the expansion and connection of world class, post-secondary institutions between the GTA and Waterloo Region by providing an affordable transit option for over 275,000 students enrolled in eight post-secondary campuses along the corridor;
  • Enhance the movement of goods and services by providing an effective transit travel alternative to the private car and by reducing highway congestion along the Continental Gateway through the provision of more park and ride opportunities;
  • Supply local businesses with better access to a region-wide labour force and reduce costs for their supply chain and export markets;
  • Provide a cost effective opportunity to expand the Regional Express Rail network more broadly and leverage over 6.5 billion dollars of existing and future transportation infrastructure investments (Waterloo Region Ion Rapid Transit corridor, Highway 401 expansion, two GO Rail corridors and the GTA West highway); and
  • Support Federal and Provincial objectives to address national, provincial and local infrastructure priorities, policy and plans.
 Cambridge on the GO - What is our ask?
The City of Cambridge and its partners, respectfully request that the Province of Ontario and Metrolinx:
  • Identify two-way, all-day GO Rail service to Milton as a Next Wave project to be implemented through the Regional Express Rail (RER) strategy within (10) years, and re-prioritized accordingly through The Big Move (adopted in 2008 by Metrolinx) legislated update.
  • Initiate the extension of GO Train service between Milton and Cambridge -by the early testing of Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) technology for commuter rail service as part of a pilot project. 
  • Include GO Train service from Milton to Cambridge as part of the Regional Express Rail (RER) Strategy.
  • Include Waterloo Region as part of the Metrolinx planning area and as part of the Big Move.
  • Immediately commence an Environmental Assessment (EA) study for the extension of GO Train service to Cambridge in order to identify and protect for new station locations, crossings and other corridor requirements.
  • Include representatives from Waterloo Region, the City of Cambridge, Halton Region and the Town of Milton on any applicable Stakeholders Committees.
  • Engage the Federal Government of Canada in discussions to establish the extension of GO Train service to Cambridge as an approved project under the Building Canada Fund.
