The City of Cambridge Planning Division is part of the Community Development Department. The Division has two sections:
- Development Planning
- Policy Planning
The Planning Division staff provides support to a number of Council advisory committees related to growth and development, heritage issues, environment and core areas revitalization.
City planning
The Planning Division helps the City develop by managing the following areas:
- Long-range city planning
- Zoning
- Subdivision of land (including severances)
- City by-laws
- Heritage properties
- Land development
- Protecting the environment
- Urban design
The department reviews planning and development matters and makes recommendations to City Council on these issues. Public input is also an important part of the policy and development process.

Planning Partnerships - Universities and Colleges
The City of Cambridge Planning Division has developed a number of partnerships with local universities and colleges including Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Waterloo and Mohwak College. The students prepare planning and urban design studies for a number of different areas and issues across the City.
