Current summer camp lineup cancelled; new alternatives expected to be announced soon

In the interest of community safety, the current summer camp lineup planned for the City of Cambridge has been cancelled. The City hopes to announce a new modified camp program reformatted to meet public health measures in the coming weeks.

“Our top priority is the safety of our children and our community,” says Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “With the current COVID-19 emergency orders in place, the original camp format wasn’t possible. We know families depend on these camps, both for recreation and childcare, and we know how much the kids love going to camp. I am pleased that City staff are currently exploring alternative options.”

All current camp registrants will be notified and a credit will be automatically placed on their account or they may request a full refund. The launch of a modified camp program is anticipated in the next few weeks and will include strict protocols to ensure camper safety.

Staff are working under the guidance of Waterloo Region Public Health to design alternative programing that will enable children to participate in summer activities safely.

Though final direction from the Province will be necessary, specific changes are expected to include:

  • Pre-screening and questionnaires upon arrival
  • Smaller camp sizes
  • A stronger focus on outdoors activities
  • Staggered entry times and lunch breaks, with a transition to allow for appropriate cleaning and disinfecting
  • The temporary suspension of camp day trips
  • Onsite guests will be limited and subject to approval

In addition, staff are reviewing virtual recreation options and will continue to offer online activities free of charge at www.cambridge.ca/recfromhome.
