Shovels hit the ground on City of Cambridge’s new Soccer Complex

The City of Cambridge, in collaboration with Conestoga College, has broken ground on its new Soccer Complex at the corner of Fountain Street and Linden Drive.

 “This is more than a sports and recreation facility, it’s a place where people will gather to learn, grow and cheer each other on,” said Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “It will contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of our community by offering a safe space for sport and so many sport tourism opportunities, further bolstering our economy.”

“We are delighted to build on our longstanding relationship with the City of Cambridge through this exciting initiative,” said Conestoga President John Tibbits. “The Soccer Complex will enhance sports and recreation opportunities for athletes and youth across the community while providing a high-quality environment where our varsity athletes can compete with pride and confidence.”  

The $12.67M project, reflects extensive consultation and planning with the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA), as well as with local Indigenous groups who will be actively involved on site at key points during construction. Once complete, local sport groups and the community will have an outdoor recreational and competitive sports facility which will include a total of seven soccer fields, including high performance artificial turf and premium natural turf fields, parking, change rooms, washrooms, trails and an open lawn space for warm-ups and training.

On June 7, City Council awarded Gateman-Milloy Inc. of Kitchener the contract to build the complex. It is anticipated to be complete in 2023.
