City celebrates completion of Beverly Street reconstruction project

Cambridge, Ontario. (November 15, 2024) The City of Cambridge marked the reopening of Beverly and Samuelson Streets with a ribbon cutting ceremony earlier today.

“I’m pleased to see the road reopen today providing a safer pathway for both pedestrians and cyclists,” said Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett. "Prior to my being elected to council in 2014 I used to watch mothers with strollers, young children, and people carrying shopping bags run through the tunnel, clearly fearful of cars that may be coming at the same time. It became a goal of mine to make this area safer once I was elected; that goal has been achieved today. I want to thank the community for their patience as work was done on this important infrastructure improvement and my past fellow councillors for recognizing the potential of a catastrophe and ensuring the project took priority.”

The City, in cooperation with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), started work on the project in April 2024, to create a new multi-use trail and pedestrian underpass at the railway bridge. Work also included upgrading all underground utilities such as watermain and sewer, as well as asphalt and curb replacements. Road widening was not part of the scope of this project due to budget constraints, property acquisition, and findings from traffic studies.

The project required City engineering staff to come together with local partners to formulate design, taking highly complex construction and rail traffic requirements into consideration.

The Beverly Street reconstruction project provides residents with a safe, active transportation option and will connect to the future planned multi-use trail on Elgin Street North, pending budget approval.

The work is part of the City’s strategic action to develop and promote more transportation options and create safe and healthy neighbourhoods as described in the City’s Strategic Plan – Cambridge Connected.
