Council Connects - June 7, 2022

Posted on Tuesday June 07, 2022

This update will serve to connect residents to important discussions and decisions being made by Cambridge City Council. The Mayor and Council make up the local government for the City of Cambridge. They develop laws and policies, which the City's administration implement.

Helping Cambridge become a destination for sports tourism

Council approved a staff recommendation to provide $5000 in sponsorship to the upcoming PGA Canada Tour event at Deer Ridge Golf Club in September. The sponsorship funds will come from the Municipal Accommodation Tax Reserve Fund and is seen as an excellent investment towards this event which will bring sport tourism to the region.

It is estimated that the economic impact of this event will be between $2-4 million dollars. Deer Ridge Golf Club is located in close proximity to Cambridge which will benefit area hotels, restaurants and stores while showcasing the beautiful community.

Clarifying the conversation – 1500 Kossuth Rd.

Council have voted to defer a staff report recommending not to enact a temporary use by-law amendment for a commercial-recreational use (outdoor paintball operation) at 1500 Kossuth Rd. This report was the result of a request from Council in April 2022 to bring forward a report and recommendations.

The deferral is to allow Flag Raiders an opportunity to complete a pre-consultation, and subsequent Regional Official Plan Amendment, Official Plan amendment and a zoning bylaw amendment applications to determine if the required usage could be permitted.

Separate from the temporary use by-law amendment process, Flag Raiders has asked Council to support their request to the Province for a Minister’s Zoning Order (MZO) to allow them to operate on the subject lands. An MZO is meant to expedite approvals and overrides local planning authority to approve development.

Fountain Street Soccer Complex – one step closer

Council has approved the staff recommendation regarding the Fountain Street Cambridge Soccer Complex determining that Gateman-Milloy Inc. of Kitchener will be awarded the contract.

Before bringing this recommendation forward, City staff sought competitive quotations from pre-qualified General Contractors for the construction of the Fountain Street Soccer Complex, located at the corner of Fountain Street and Linden Drive.

The $11.7M contract will see the construction of an outdoor recreational and competitive sports facility including sports lighting, high-performance artificial turf sports surfacing, premium natural turf soccer field installation, building installation, site servicing, parking lot installation and landscaping.

The City of Cambridge is proud to partner with Conestoga College in the delivery of this new sports facility.
