Statement from City of Cambridge Mayor, Jan Liggett
I would like to take a moment to express my profound awe to the students, staff, and professors at the University of Waterloo who have gone back to class after the senseless violence that occurred on June 28, 2023. There is no place for anti-2SLGBTQIA+ rhetoric and physical attacks in our community.
At the beginning of Pride Month, I stated that I hoped that every 2SLGBTQIA+ person feels welcome in our community. This hope continues today as these UW students and faculty return to class, choosing to demonstrate resilience and strength as the best course of action.
Returning to class will be difficult but know that so many people in the community support and stand behind you. We want to emphasize that we stand united against gender-based violence and all other forms of hatred and bigotry, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for each and every member of our city.
Jan Liggett
Mayor, City of Cambridge
