#RecFromHome launches WOW Social for older adults in Cambridge

Posted on Thursday April 23, 2020

As part of the #RecFromHome offerings, we’re pleased to introduce WOW Social. This is an extension of our Without Walls (WOW) program which offers free recreation activities over the phone to members of our 50+ recreation centres.

With the launch of the new WOW Social program, we’re now able to now offer this service to all older adults who are looking to enjoy group recreational activities while our in-person programs and services are closed.

“This is another great example of how staff are finding creative solutions to keep our community connected and active during this COVID-19 period,” said Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “We are all social beings and many people, especially those living alone, are finding things a little isolating due to prolonged social distancing during the pandemic. But although we are physically apart these days, we don’t need to be emotionally apart.”

WOW Social will provide many of the activities, support services and programs typically offered through the City’s 50+ recreation centres using simple phone technology instead.  The program enables recreation staff to bring groups of older adults together to socialize, exercise, learn, and have fun.

Sessions will be offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and are 30 to 45 minutes in duration. Examples of topics and activities planned for WOW Social include:

  • Musical entertainment
  • Fitness and exercise programs
  • Health & wellness – meditation, mindfulness, caregiver support
  • Brain games & coffee break trivia
  • Education and information
  • Spring gardening

A special virtual launch event will be held during the Friday, May 1 session to officially kick off WOW Social. The event will include an introduction to the program, greetings from Mayor McGarry and live musical entertainment.

How to participate

Different themes and programs will be offered three mornings a week. Those interested can check the program schedule on our website at www.cambridge.ca/wow. For those participating in the program for the first time, or those requiring support to set up an account, please allow up to 48 hours for initial enrollment. To register, call Service Cambridge at (519) 623-1340 or register online at www.cambridge.ca/wow.

WOW Social is free, however some sessions have limited space.  Participants must register in advance. Waitlists will be available for sessions that are full and recreation staff will schedule additional sessions if needed.
