City of Cambridge Now on Bluesky

Posted on Monday April 07, 2025

The City of Cambridge is excited to announce that we are part of a new social media community and are now officially on Bluesky, a platform that offers a fresh, user-centered experience.

The decision to join Bluesky reflects the City’s commitment to embracing new technologies and platforms that promote transparency, inclusiveness, and accessibility. Bluesky uses a decentralized model that allows users to manage their own data and customize algorithms which improves authenticity and the overall user experience. It also offers a greater commitment to accessibility as Bluesky allows you to require alt text for images, which better supports users who rely on screen readers.

“It's important to adapt to new, innovative platforms that align with our values of integrity, respect, inclusiveness, and service,” said Mayor Jan Liggett. “I think residents will find Bluesky refreshing, and I invite the community to follow us there.”

By joining Bluesky, the City aims to provide residents with another way to stay informed, connected, and engaged. Our goal is to reach people where they are, offer timely updates, and create a respectful space where everyone feels welcome.

“We're excited to welcome the City of Cambridge to Bluesky! For so many people, social media is where they get the latest breaking news and updates, and Cambridge's official city presence helps make Bluesky an even better home. Through customizable features like custom feeds, governments, journalists, and more can reach their audiences directly, free of algorithmic manipulation,” said Emily Liu, Head of Special Projects, Bluesky.

We invite everyone to follow us on Bluesky at @cambridge.ca for the latest news, updates, and information from the City.

This new presence on Bluesky is part of the City’s broader effort to enhance communication, promote inclusivity, and ensure everyone has access to the information they need.
