Helen Shwery elected as Councillor of Ward 1
Cambridge, Ontario. (November 14, 2023) – Cambridge City Clerk Danielle Manton has certified the official results for the by-election for Ward 1 Councillor. With 944 votes, Helen Shwery has been elected Councillor of Ward 1.
A total of 1,920 votes were cast in this by-election, representing 13.7% of eligible voters in Ward 1.
“On behalf of Cambridge City Council, I want to welcome Helen Shwery to Cambridge City Council”, said Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett. “I am confident that Councillor Shwery will bring a unique point of view to decisions made at Council and be a passionate advocate for residents of Ward 1. It will be good to have a full complement of council once again and we look forward to having Helen as part of our team."

Background
Following the passing of longtime Ward 1 Councillor Donna Reid, on August 13, 2023, Council officially declared the Office of Councillor, Ward 1 vacant as required by the Ontario Municipal Act, 2001. Council had 60 days to determine the method by which they chose to fill the vacancy of Office of Councillor, Ward 1. The options available to Council included an appointment process or choosing to hold a by-election. Council was presented with various methods to fill the vacancy through appointment or by-election.
The by-election for Office of Councillor for Ward 1 was held by internet voting and paper ballot with manual count.
