City breaks ground on new Recreation Complex
The City of Cambridge has officially started construction of the new Recreation Complex in the south end of the city following a groundbreaking ceremony earlier today.
“Today marks a significant milestone for the future Recreation Complex. We heard loud and clear from our community that they want a space that provides opportunities to be and stay active whether with aquatics, the use of the gymnasium or outside in the park and that is what we will deliver,” said Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett. “This has been a long time in the making, and we are now one step closer to opening the doors on what will soon be a beautiful building and space for the community to come together, be active and connect.”
In September Melloul Blamey Construction was awarded the construction contract for the $93 million Recreation Complex. The Cambridge Recreation Complex will include:
· A 10 lane, 25m swimming pool and warm water leisure pool
· 3 FIBA sized basketball courts
· A running/walking track and fitness area
· Multi-purpose rooms
· Cambridge Public Library branch
· Licensed food concession
· Park amenities
“In 2019, Cambridge Council decided to move ahead with building a recreation complex in the south end of the city. Five years later it’s exciting to watch construction get underway and know that soon the Cambridge Recreation Complex will be able to serve the city’s growing population with more recreation and wellness opportunities, as well as attract visitors and organized sporting events,” said Shane Taylor, Manager of Recreation, Placemaking Capital Projects.
The Recreation Complex will be built on 32.5 acres of land on Wesley Boulevard and will be part of a joint use campus that will include a new Catholic elementary school and a new public school including daycare.
"The new Recreation Complex is a unique collaboration with the Waterloo Region District School Board and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. This innovative approach, featuring independent buildings that share key facilities like a community park, allows us to provide more amenities for our residents while managing costs efficiently. It’s a win-win that reflects our commitment to creating vibrant, accessible spaces for everyone in Cambridge,” said David Calder, City Manager.
Construction is expected to be completed in late 2026. For more information visit cambridge.ca/reccomplex
