City of Cambridge Council adopts 2025 Strong Mayor Budget

Posted on Monday December 09, 2024

Cambridge, Ontario. (December 9, 2024) Mayor Jan Liggett and City of Cambridge Council have adopted the City’s first ever Strong Mayor Budget, which outlines a plan to fund key capital projects, more than 140 city services and includes a 1% infrastructure renewal levy, resulting in a total property tax increase of 1.28%. The budget was developed under the Strong Mayor legislation which sets out clear timelines and opportunities for the public and Council to provide input.

“The adoption of Cambridge’s first Strong Mayor Budget marks a significant step forward in how we deliver services and plan for our city’s future,” said Mayor Jan Liggett. “This budget reflects the priorities of our residents, balances growth with fiscal responsibility, and invests in infrastructure and services that matter most to our community. Staff have talked to residents throughout the year to hear what is important to them. I am proud of the collaborative efforts of Council and staff in achieving a budget that ensures Cambridge remains a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive city.”

The budget maintains all existing service levels while funding important initiatives to support top priorities, including adding more programs and spaces for children and youth, protecting heritage assets and coordinating special events. It also includes an incremental 1% infrastructure renewal levy to maintain City assets in good condition and address the current funding gap over the next ten years.

Beginning in July 2025, stormwater costs will be transitioned from the property tax bill to the water utility bill. This new stormwater utility will be based on individual property usage and ensures that charges better reflect the amount of stormwater runoff each property generates. Operating as a utility will deliver additional savings for the average residential homeowner.
