Unofficial voting results for Ward 7 by-election

The 2020 By-election for Ward 7 wrapped up this evening with polls officially closing at 8 p.m. The by-election saw a voter turnout of 21.11% with 1232 of eligible voters casting a ballot.

With 392 votes, the unofficial new Councillor for Ward 7 is Scott Hamilton. Official results will be released by the City Clerk on Tuesday, Oct. 6 and will be available at www.cambridge.ca/byelection.

“On behalf of Cambridge City Council, we’re so pleased to welcome Scott Hamilton to the horseshoe,” said Mayor McGarry. “Frank Monteiro left some big shoes to fill but we know that Scott will hit the ground running, provide dedicated service to the residents of Ward 7, and be a passionate advocate for the Cambridge community.”

The Ward 7 by-election was originally scheduled for March and had been put on hold when the City Clerk declared an emergency pursuant to the Municipal Election Act, Section 53 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure the highest level of safety, numerous precautions were in effect including, maximum capacities, single-use pens and ballot sleeves, plexiglass barriers and enhanced cleaning. Voters also had the choice to cast their vote from the curbside or send a proxy.
