City of Cambridge extends suspension of City-affiliated events and festivals throughout the summer; some online alternatives planned

Posted on Wednesday June 10, 2020

Cambridge, June 10, 2020 – In order to adhere to guidelines on public gatherings, the City of Cambridge is extending the suspension of all in-person special events and festivals until September 10, 2020. This will affect all City-run and City-sponsored events, as well as any events booked on City property. Plans are underway for several events to shift to an online format and others continue to be reviewed for potential alternatives.

“This is disappointing as our summer events have always brought crowds from all across the region and province and truly showcase all that Cambridge has to offer,” says Mayor Kathryn McGarry. “Events are natural gathering spaces, and as we move towards recovery we can’t afford to slip backwards. Suspending our large events and providing online alternatives, where possible, will ensure the public stays safe throughout the summer and will put our community in a stronger position to continue to fight COVID-19.”

Staff are working closely with event organizers and any associated rental fees will be refunded. Announcements on new formats, future dates, and alternative events are expected to continue throughout the summer as staff and community groups review options and plan next steps.

“Thank you to the many community groups and volunteers who work so hard on our events and festivals that add so much to the vitality of our community,” adds Mayor McGarry. “This has been a difficult period and we will all certainly miss these annual summer events; events that have become a tradition for so many.”

See below for the status of previously-scheduled City-run or City-sponsored events. For community events not affiliated with the City, residents are encouraged to reach out to the organizers directly for details.

Originally, the City of Cambridge, in collaboration with our various event partners and area municipalities, announced the postponement or cancellation of municipal-affiliated festivals and events until the end of June.

Today’s extension will be implemented by all area municipalities and supports the Public Health direction that physical distancing is critical to stopping the chain of infection of COVID-19.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, further changes may be necessary at a future date. The City is committed to providing event opportunities and will continue working to develop alternative solutions whenever possible.
