Cambridge honoured with Ontario Age-Friendly Community Recognition Award
Earlier today, at the inaugural Age-Friendly Community Symposium, the City of Cambridge was honoured with an Ontario Age-Friendly Community Award. The award recognizes communities who demonstrate a strong commitment to age-friendly initiatives such as engagement with local seniors and collaboration with community partners.
Age-friendly communities are characterized by accessible and inclusive environments, both physical and social, that enable seniors to live independent, healthy and active, safe and socially connected lives.
The City was nominated for the award by the Cambridge Council on Aging, a local community group providing valuable advocacy and education for the aging population in Cambridge. The City’s collaboration with the Council on Aging, and commitment to age-friendliness, reflects the City’s strategic plan by promoting a caring community where people can make strong connections and lead safe, healthy and productive lives.
Based on the recommendations from the community, the City of Cambridge launched the Age-Friendly Cambridge Action Plan in 2013. The plan’s initiatives include improve housing, transportation, health supports, social inclusion, and increased access to information for older adults.
Joining Cambridge are the Cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, who were also recognized with awards, reflecting a region-wide, age-friendly community where seniors can connect and thrive.
In addition to specialty events and programming, the City of Cambridge offers a wide range of senior services including three senior-focused facilities, a variety of recreation programs, an adult day program, hearing and foot care clinics, reflexology and chair massage.
