Mayor’s Remarks, Oct 10 Council meeting

It is my hope that everyone had a very restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends.

Little did we know what would be unfolding on the other side of the world while we celebrated our holiday in this country we are so blessed to live in.

Ukraine and Russia continue to be at war, and this weekend the people of Israel suffered a horrific terrorist attack, leading to war between the State of Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas. The indiscriminate killing and kidnapping of civilians by the thousands this weekend took evil to a whole new level.

We condemn the brutality towards innocent citizens and the continued suffering of each side, Palestinians and Israelis alike. With the indiscriminate killing and kidnapping of civilians comes repercussions being inflicted on many blameless innocents caught up in this while going about their daily lives; the pain will endure for years to come.

Many families in Canada have lost friends and loved ones, while the suffering and death toll rises each passing hour.

We need to realize that there are over 40 armed conflicts world wide, international and non international, and recognize that there are many civilians caught up in these as well. Let’s not forget those.

If you pray, your prayers are needed now for all those affected.

If you don’t, collective thoughts are never unappreciated.
