Community Outreach Task Force Public Safety Sub-Committee Update

The public safety sub-committee of the Community Outreach Task Force, chaired by Superintendent Shirley Hilton of the Waterloo Regional Police Services (WRPS), met yesterday afternoon to share information and discuss property protection trends across the region.

The public safety sub-committee is made up of representatives from the WRPS, Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services, Chamber of Commerce, City of Cambridge staff and City Council, and community members.

“This meeting was about sharing information and discussing potential public safety initiatives for recommendation to the larger task force,” said Superintendent Hilton. “This is a community issue and we all need to collaborate about the different aspects surrounding opioids and harm reduction and public safety"

Several presentations were made by community members; as well Chief Building Official Dennis Purcell gave an update on the City’s response to needle related debris. There has been a substantial decrease in the numbers of calls and incidents of needle debris over the last few weeks. City staff will continue proactive monitoring and tracking.
