Join us for Orange Shirt Day, September 30, 2022
September 30, 2022, marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On this day we also participate in Orange Shirt Day and invite you to join us in honouring and remembering Canada’s residential school survivors, the children who did not survive, their families and communities.
Orange shirts commemorate the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor who was stripped of her new orange shirt when she attended residential school as a six-year-old child. In Phyllis’ words, “The colour orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing.”
A vigil will take place at the Cambridge Sculpture Garden, near the pedestrian bridge from 7-9 p.m. It will include Indigenous song and drumming, speaker Charity Fleming, and two minutes and 15 seconds of silent reflection.
