New Lead Testing Requirements for Drinking Water Systems
In keeping with new legislation from the Ministry of Environment (MOE), the City of Cambridge has implemented a proactive annual program to analyze lead levels in the community drinking water. On July 26th, 2007, the Ministry of the Environment amended the Drinking Water Systems Regulation to revise the requirement for lead sampling. The purpose of the new lead testing requirements is to determine whether communities have a problem with lead in drinking water at the tap. Testing throughout the City would provide the basis on which to initiate actions to reduce lead levels through control of lead corrosion and would provide evidence of any changes in lead levels over time.
The program began December 15, 2007 and runs until April 15 in the first phase, with the second phase occurring between June 15 and October 15, 2008. Random, city-wide samples will be collected during each phase which include some 100 residential tests as well as samples from non-residential buildings like arenas. There will be also water collected from the distribution systems to complete the variety of tests needed to thoroughly evaluate the full spectrum of water sources in Cambridge.
