Core Areas Parking Master Plan
Core Areas Parking Master Plan
Why is the City of Cambridge undertaking the Core Areas Parking Master Plan?
Parking affects all residents of Cambridge and is one of the biggest factors in achieving a successful urban area. Too little parking can affect transportation accessibility and business viability; while, too much parking can impede progress towards a more sustainable City.
In recognition of the need to develop improved plans for parking, the City initiated the Core Areas Parking Master Plan, focused on the three Core Areas of Galt, Hespeler and Preston, in March 2008.
What will the Master Plan cover?
A key objective of this Master Plan is to accurately assess existing and future parking needs in order to develop a forward-looking and sustainable parking plan for the Core Areas of Galt, Hespeler and Preston for the next 15-20 years. The Master Plan will assess existing parking needs and policies, develop future forecasts of parking demand, and identify alternative methods of providing and managing parking. A major initial task is to collect data on existing parking demand and supply. Once the problems and opportunities are fully documented, a set of alternative solutions will be evaluated and presented to the Public and Agencies for comment.
Study process and timing
The parking study is scheduled to be completed by March 2009. In addition to the technical work in collecting parking demand data, a wide range of consultation activities are planned including meetings with stakeholders, including community and business representatives, technical agencies and public information centres.
The first Public Information Centre (PIC) was held on June 18, 2008. This PIC introduced the study and presented background information and data on existing parking supply and demand. See related documents, below, to access the Information Presented at the PIC and the Parking Survey and Background Reports.
The City also conducted a web survey and on-the-spot interviews with persons parking in each of the Core Areas over the summer, to gather their opinions of the current parking system and suggestions for improvements. See related documents to access the Public Consultation Summary Report for more information.
A second series of PICs is scheduled for late January, with one PIC being held in each Core Area. These meetings will present the range of alternatives that have been developed during the Master Plan to address short and long term parking needs, their evaluation and the recommended program for parking supply and accompanying policies for the next 20 years. Stay tuned for information on where and when each PIC will be held.
Following the second series of PICs, the project team will review the comments received, make revisions to the recommendations and then present the Master Plan to City of Cambridge General Committee for approval in March 2009.
