Take the LEED® Magazine

Cambridge celebrates a Canadian First
Take the LEED® - Cambridge Ontario

At the fresh start of 2009, the Corporation of the City of Cambridge published Take the Leed®, a magazine with a focus on the environment. This publication comes on the heels of the announcement that the Cambridge City Hall is the greenest in Canada, and is the first in Canada to receive the GOLD Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®). To read more about Cambridge City Hall reaching gold, click here. The gold LEED® status was given by the Canadian Green Building Council who's mission is to lead the effort to create buildings and communities that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live, work and play.

As Ontario Minister of Environment John Gerretsen recently said at the opening of Cambridge City Hall, "Cambridge cares deeply about its environmental responsibilities." He added, "with the opening of your new City Hall, you're encouraging public institutions and businesses across the province to also go above and beyond...and raise environmental protection to new heights."

The magazine features Cambridge City Hall's Living Wall, a four-storey wall filled with thousands of lush tropical plants.

The 100 square metre wall acts as a natural purifier; cleansing the building's air of pollutants such as volatile organic compounds, dust and spores, then recirculating fresh oxygenated air throughout the entire city hall.

The living wall is fully integrated into the building's mechanical heating and cooling systems. This makes the living wall at the Cambridge City Hall on the leading edge of a new generation of green technology.

"Building green and sustainable buildings for our public infrastructure is going to be fundamental to our ability to address the challenges of climate change and in reducing our greenhouse gas emissions," -Ontario Environment Minister John Gerretsen
