Urban Design Awards
The 2006 Urban Design Awards program was the third hosted by the City of Cambridge, with awards granted previously in 2000 and 2003. The Urban Design Awards program has been established with the intent of presenting the awards once during each term of Council. The purpose of the program is to honour work of high calibre that is undertaken by the development community, with the goal of encouraging excellence in future developments.
Year 2000 Awards were presented for these three projects:
1. Saginaw Public School, Award of Excellence
2. Coronation Place, Award of Merit
3. Floral Factory, Award of Merit

Year 2003 Awards were presented for these four projects:
1. Preston Library, Award of Excellence
2. 18 Main Street, Award of Merit
3. Wellington Square, Award of Merit
4. Deln Construction, Award of Merit

Year 2006 Awards were presented for these four projects:
1. The Spa, Award of Merit
2. Our Lady of Fatima School, Award of Merit
3. School of Architecture, Award of Excellence
4. Challenger Motor Freight, Award of Excellence
The 2006 Selection Committee for this round of awards was comprised of Mayor Doug Craig, Alan Millar representing the City's Core Areas Revitalization Advisory Committee (CARAC), Uel McFall representing the City's Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC), Chris Pickard, Architect and Director of Planning, Engineering and Construction at the University of Guelph, and Karen Hammond, Lecturer in Urban Design at the University of Waterloo School of Planning.

Award decisions are based on a number of factors, including the following:
1. Aesthetics: the attractiveness of the overall development, including the architecture of the building
2. Function: how the building and the development in its entirety uses space and relates to other buildings, the street, and parking areas; and,
3. Community Benefits: how the development contributes to the community through its pleasing appearance and function.
