The committee is comprised of volunteers appointed by City Council for their knowledge of architecture, landscape architecture, construction, local history, law, graphic arts, real estate or first-hand experience with building restoration; one member of City Council; and the Heritage Planner, who is full time city staff.

City of Cambridge Official Plan sets out the roles and responsibilities of Cambridge M.H.A.C. in section 5.4.2

It is the policy of the City to appoint a Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee (M.H.A.C.) pursuant to the Ontario Heritage Act. A key role of the M.H.A.C. is to prepare and publish the inventory of the built heritage resources described in Policy 5.2.1 and undertake public awareness programs. Council shall not give notice of its intention to designate a property or to repeal a by-law designating a property or any part of the property in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act without first consulting its M.H.A.C.. Council will also consult with its M.H.A.C. when reviewing applications for funding through the Cambridge Heritage Grant Programme; proposals for signage on designated structures; proposals to alter designated structures; applications to sever designated properties and other development applications potentially affecting a property in the inventory.

Each year, M.H.A.C. prepares an Annual Report to Cambridge Council outlining the Committee's accomplishments. The Annual Report highlights M.H.A.C.'s role as an advisory committee to Council, which provides advice on matters relating to the Ontario Heritage Act and, to a lesser extent, the Planning Act.

The Annual Report describes the various duties of M.H.A.C. and the accomplishments achieved in the following categories:

  • Heritage Conservation Districts
  • Heritage Designation (Part IV)
  • Heritage Conservation Fund
  • C.M.H.A.C. Sub Committees
  • Outreach and Community Work
